About the Artwork

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901), At the Concert (Au Concert), 1896. Color lithograph, sheet: 19 × 14 in. (48.26 × 35.56 cm). Milwaukee Art Museum, Gift of Mrs. Harry Lynde Bradley. M1977.63.

For this poster advertising American printing inks, Lautrec posed his cousin Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran and actress Emilienne d’Alençon at the Cabaret des Décadents. Lautrec prepared the plates in France, and then shipped them to the United States, where they were printed and the poster was distributed.

Exhibition label, Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His Contemporaries, Baker/Rowland Galleries, June 1–September 9, 2012. Written by Mary Weaver Chapin, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings.
