About the Artwork

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901), The White Review (La Revue blanche), 1895. Color lithograph, 50 1/2 × 36 7/16 in. (128.27 × 92.55 cm). Milwaukee Art Museum, Gift of Mrs. Harry Lynde Bradley. M1977.58.

Poster for the journal La Revue blanche, printed without letters for collectors

Here Lautrec depicts Misia Natanson, wife of Thadée Natanson, the co-founder of La Revue blanche, elegantly ice skating across the scene. Lautrec greatly admired Misia and sympathetically depicted this elegant and intelligent woman. He also had a keen eye for fashion and took obvious delight in her elaborately plumed hat and stylish fur stole.
